I. Background
Türkiye, with its rich history and diverse cultural tapestry, has witnessed a growing presence of the African Diaspora, contributing to the nation's vibrant mosaic. The historical ties between Türkiye and Africa, rooted in trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange, have shaped a unique narrative of connection and coexistence. In recent decades, an increasing number of individuals from various African countries have chosen Türkiye as their home, bringing with them a wealth of cultural, social, and economic diversity.
However, despite the positive aspects of this diaspora, there exists a need for a nuanced understanding of the experiences and challenges African individuals face in contributing to the economic and social relations of Türkiye and African countries.
Though Bizim Afrika, a platform that brings together the African diaspora within Türkiye for the improvement of relations between African countries and Türkiye, this forum aims to promote dialogue, transcend stereotypes, and identify actionable steps to address the evolving needs of the African Diaspora in Türkiye.
By providing a platform for open discussions and insights from diverse perspectives, the Mini Forum endeavors to contribute to a more interconnected and harmonious society that celebrates the richness brought forth by the African Diaspora in Türkiye.
II. Scope
The Forum aims to explore and delve into the multifaceted aspects of the African Diaspora in Türkiye, fostering an inclusive dialogue on the diverse experiences, engagements, and emerging challenges faced by individuals of African descent within the country.
III. Objectives
Understanding Experiences: Analyse and showcase the rich and varied experiences of the African Diaspora in Türkiye, ranging from cultural integration to socio-economic contributions.
Examining Engagements: Explore the different ways in which the African Diaspora actively engages with Turkish society, including community initiatives, cultural exchanges, and professional collaborations.
Addressing New Challenges: Identify and discuss the contemporary challenges faced by the African Diaspora in Türkiye, such as cultural stereotypes, access to education, and socio-economic disparities.
IV. Format
The Forum will be held at the Sütlüce Campus of Istanbul Commerce University. It consists of panel discussions, keynote presentations, and interactive sessions, providing a platform for experts, scholars, community leaders, and individuals from the African Diaspora and Türkiye to share their insights, experiences, and recommendations.
Based on the key topics, the Forum is set to have the following panels:
